BACKGROUND: Meniscal root tears can lead to early knee osteoarthritis and pain. This study aimed (1) to compare clinical and radiological outcomes between patients who underwent arthroscopic meniscal root repair after meniscal root tears and those who received non-surgical treatment, and (2) to identify whether baseline MRI findings could be potential predictors for future treatment strategies. METHODS: Patients with meniscal root tears were identified from our picture archiving and communication system from 2016 to 2020. Two radiologists reviewed radiographs and MRI studies using Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grading and a modified Whole Organ MRI Scoring (WORMS) at baseline and follow-up. The median (interquartile range [IQR]) of follow-up radiographs and MRI studies were 134 (44-443) days and 502 (260-1176) days, respectively. MR images were assessed for root tear-related findings. Pain scores using visual analogue scale (VAS) and management strategies (non-surgical vs. arthroscopic root repair) were also collected. Chi-squared tests and independent t-tests were used to assess differences regarding clinical and imaging variables between treatment groups. Pulsed-power-driven underwater electrical explosion of cylindrical or conical wire arrays produces supersonic water jets that emerge from a bath, propagating through the air above it. Interaction of these jets with solid targets may represent a new platform for attaining materials at high pressure (>1010 Pa) conditions in a university-scale laboratory. However, measurements of the internal structure of such jets and how they interact with targets are difficult optically due to large densities and density contrasts involved. We utilized multi-frame x-ray radiographic imaging capabilities of the ID19 beamline at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility to explore the water jet and its interaction with a 50 μm thick copper foil placed a few mm from the surface of water. The jet was generated with a ∼130 kA-amplitude current pulse of ∼450 ns rise time applied to a conical wire array. X-ray imaging revealed a droplet-type structure of the jet with an average density of <400 kg/m3 propagating with a velocity of ∼1400 m/s. Measurements of deformation and subsequent perforation of the target by the jet suggested pressures at the jet–target interface of ∼5 × 109 Pa. The results were compared to hydrodynamic simulations for better understanding of the jet parameters and their interaction with the foil target. These results can be used in future research to optimize the platform, and extend it to larger jet velocities in the case of higher driving currents supplied to the wire array. BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a neoplastic transformation of myeloid precursors that commonly presents as an osteolytic lesion of the long or flat bones in children. Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are benign neoplasms that frequently affect the metaphysis of long bones and the spine, often revealing a rapidly expansile lesion with fluid-fluid levels. LCH with secondary ABC-like changes is a rare condition that has only been reported five times, with two presentations in the cranium. The aim of this paper is to review the etiology, clinical and radiographic presentations, and treatment of this condition, as well as to present a novel case on the topic. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a 5-year-old boy with a rapidly growing head mass and eye pain resulting in a diagnosis of LCH with secondary ABC-like changes. Radiography demonstrated an expansile, lytic lesion of the left parietal bone with fluid-fluid levels. A confirmatory diagnosis was made through histopathology, demonstrating an inflammatory, histiocytic infiltrate staining positive for CD1a, CD68, CD207 (Langerin), and S-100. The lesion was surgically excised, and the patient recovered without any complications. CONCLUSION: We present a novel case of LCH with secondary ABC-like changes managed with surgical excision. While a radiographic workup with multiple imaging modalities is helpful for diagnosis, a thorough immunohistochemical analysis is essential as imaging characteristics are variable and nonspecific. Furthermore, surgical excision should be considered first-line treatment for lesions involving the skull in surgically accessible areas as it is curative, alleviates symptoms, and allows for histopathological diagnosis.

PURPOSE: Proximal fibula fractures are often associated with tibial plateau fractures, but their relationship is poorly characterized. The purpose of this study was to better define the relationship between tibial plateau injury severity and presence of associated soft tissue injuries. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on all operatively treated tibial plateau fractures at a Level 1 trauma center over a 5-year period. Patient demographics, injury radiographs, CT scans, operative reports and follow-up were reviewed. RESULTS: Queried tibial plateau fractures from 2014 to 2019 totaled 217 fractures in 215 patients. Fifty-two percent were classified as AO/OTA 41B and 48% were AO/OTA 41C. Thirty-nine percent had an associated proximal fibula fracture. X-ray radiography offers the ability to noninvasively inspect the internal structure and material composition of objects. Dual-energy radiography allows material discrimination but is limited in quantitative material measurements due to the broad nature of the interrogating x-ray spectrum. Spectral radiography detectors provide an observation of not just the number of x rays that are transmitted through a sample but also the spectrum. Here, experimental validations of a method to use spectral x-ray radiography to accurately quantify the uranium mass in a powder are presented. An accurate system response model was developed, which includes a model of the incident x-ray source spectrum and a pixel-wise detector response that describes how the transmitted x rays were observed. Further, a calibration to account for the effect of partial x-ray attenuation was developed. The method is demonstrated to be capable of estimating the uranium mass in a variety of uranium oxide powders to a bias of − 0.01 ± 0.62 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rationale and objectivesSpinal osteoporotic compression fractures (OCFs) can be an early biomarker for osteoporosis but are often subtle, incidental, and underreported. To ensure early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis, we aimed to build a deep learning vertebral body classifier for OCFs as a critical component of our future automated opportunistic screening tool.Materials and methodsWe retrospectively assembled a local dataset, including 1790 subjects and 15,050 vertebral bodies (thoracic and lumbar). Each vertebral body was annotated using an adaption of the modified-2 algorithm-based qualitative criteria. The Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study dataset provided thoracic and lumbar spine radiographs of 5994 men from six clinical centers. Using both datasets, five deep learning algorithms were trained to classify each individual vertebral body of the spine radiographs. Classification performance was compared for these models using multiple metrics, including the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC), sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value (PPV).ResultsOur best model, built with ensemble averaging, achieved an AUC-ROC of 0.948 and 0.936 on the local dataset's test set and the MrOS dataset's test set, respectively. After setting the cutoff threshold to prioritize PPV, this model achieved a sensitivity of 54.5% and 47.8%, a specificity of 99.7% and 99.6%, and a PPV of 89.8% and 94.8%.ConclusionOur model achieved an AUC-ROC>0.90 on both datasets. This testing shows some generalizability to real-world clinical datasets and a suitable performance for a future opportunistic osteoporosis screening tool.

PurposeThe management of foreign body ingestion proves to be a challenge. Magnets pose a unique set of risks when ingested due to their attractive forces and subsequent risk of adherence, pressure necrosis, and perforation complications. Radiographs only provide a limited snapshot in the setting of multiple magnet ingestion when the risk of complication is highest. We hypothesize that abdominal ultrasound (US) has the potential to supplement radiographs in assessing ingested magnets by determining the presence of bowel loop entrapment and of any extraluminal fluid.MethodsWe recreated various scenarios of magnet configurations using animal cadaveric bowel models. X-ray and US images were obtained in various bowel-magnet orientations.ResultsWe identified several key US features to suggest bowel wall tethering. These include direct visualization of bowel wall entrapment between magnets (what we term the "dangerous V sign"), anti-dependent positions of the magnets, and inability to separate loops of bowel with compression.ConclusionThese findings could potentially provide valuable information when directing the urgency of intervention in foreign body ingestion. Ultrasound may supplement and improve the current guidelines in management of magnet ingestion.

Objective To explore the clinical efficacy and imaging changes of minimally invasive nonsurgical periodontal therapy (MINST) assisted by endoscopy for deep intrabony defects and to compare its effectiveness with that of traditional scaling and root planning (SRP) to therefore provide a reference for clinical periodontal treatment. Methods Patients with deep intrabony defects ≥ 4 mm in size were selected and divided into two groups: the MINST (MINST, 20 cases, 81 sites) group and the classic scaling and root planing (SRP, 20 cases, 80 sites) group. Before treatment and 12 and 24 months after treatment, probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL) were examined. Moreover, changes in the depth and angle of the intrabony defects were analyzed. Follow-up examination and maintenance treatment should be conducted every 3 months for 12 months after the initial treatment and every 6 months thereafter until 24 months. Pediatric fractures, especially distal forearm fractures, represent a significant global medical concern, affecting up to 50% of pediatric fracture cases. This narrative review aims to compare diagnostic modalities to determine which offers higher accuracy, minimizes radiation exposure, and is adaptable to diverse clinical settings. In the choice between ultrasound and X-ray for diagnosing distal forearm fractures in children, each modality has its merits. X-ray provides accuracy and value in well-equipped facilities, while ultrasound, being radiation-free, is effective in resource-limited areas and is essential for pediatric patients to avoid radiation exposure. Professional training and continual updates are crucial. Moreover, it underscores that alongside diagnostic imaging, comprehensive clinical assessment remains pivotal for making informed medical decisions. The choice of method should consider individual case factors and prioritize patient safety.

Objective This study aimed to develop and validate a deep learning (DL) algorithm for the quantitative measurement of thoracolumbar (TL) fracture features, and to evaluate its efficacy across varying levels of clinical expertise. Methods Using the pretrained Mask Region-Based Convolutional Neural Networks model, originally developed for vertebral body segmentation and fracture detection, we fine-tuned the model and added a new module for measuring fracture metrics—compression rate (CR), Cobb angle (CA), Gardner angle (GA), and sagittal index (SI)—from lumbar spine lateral radiographs. These metrics were derived from six-point labeling by 3 radiologists, forming the ground truth (GT). Training utilized 1,000 nonfractured and 318 fractured radiographs, while validations employed 213 internal and 200 external fractured radiographs. The accuracy of the DL algorithm in quantifying fracture features was evaluated against GT using the intraclass correlation coefficient. Additionally, 4 readers with varying expertise levels, including trainees and an attending spine surgeon, performed measurements with and without DL assistance, and their results were compared to GT and the DL model. Results The DL algorithm demonstrated good to excellent agreement with GT for CR, CA, GA, and SI in both internal (0.860, 0.944, 0.932, and 0.779, respectively) and external (0.836, 0.940, 0.916, and 0.815, respectively) validations. DL-assisted measurements significantly improved most measurement values, particularly for trainees. Conclusion The DL algorithm was validated as an accurate tool for quantifying TL fracture features using radiographs. DL-assisted measurement is expected to expedite the diagnostic process and enhance reliability, particularly benefiting less experienced clinicians.

Abstract The main purpose of vital pulp therapy (VPT) is to preserve the integrity and function of the pulp. A wide variety of materials and techniques have been proposed to improve treatment outcomes, and among them, the utilization of lasers has gained significant attention. The application of lasers in different stages of VPT has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, surpassing previous approaches. This study aimed to review the applications of lasers in different steps of VPT and evaluate associated clinical and radiographic outcomes. An electronic search using Scopus, MEDLINE, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases from 2000 to 2023 was carried out by two independent researchers. The focus was on human studies that examined the clinical and/or radiographic effects of different laser types in VPT. A total of 4243 studies were included in this narrative review article. Based on the compiled data, it can be concluded that although current literature suggests laser may be proposed as an adjunct modality for some procedural steps in VPT, more research with standardized methodologies and criteria is needed to obtain more reliable and conclusive results.

Abstract The Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA) minimum competency framework requires all Australian radiographers to identify significant pathology in radiological images and take appropriate action to alert these urgent findings and ensure patient safety. Despite professional bodies endorsing the provision of preliminary image evaluations (PIE) in written format, radiographer image interpretation often remains inconsistent, informal, or undocumented. The purpose of this narrative review was to assess the literature to determine if PIE in the form of written radiographer comments is of value to the Australian healthcare system. A structured search was completed using four health research databases: CINAHL, Medline, Scopus and Web of Science. Studies have suggested that there is a contextual need for commenting due to increased imaging service pressures, radiologist shortages and subsequent reporting delays. Radiographers appear well placed and willing to provide accurate initial input with evidence that this would be valued and appreciated within the multidisciplinary team. Radiographer commenting has also been shown to reduce diagnostic and communicative errors with the potential to improve patient management. Finally, it was shown that participation in image interpretation practices can enhance recruitment, retention and job satisfaction among radiographers. Therefore, the current literature supports implementation of radiographer commenting within the Australian healthcare system.

Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease of unknown etiology that can involve various organs and tissues. The clinical manifestations vary greatly, so it is difficult to make a clear diagnosis of sarcoidosis with just the clinical manifestation and imaging findings. The diagnosis and treatment of a patient with systemic sarcoidosis was reported: a 51-year-old woman presented with a dry cough. Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and conventional ultrasonography (US) suggested miliary nodules and inflammatory changes in the lungs, there was mediastinal, retroperitoneal and hilar lymph node enlargement and uneven liver echo, respectively. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET-CT) further suggested that the lesions were distributed throughout the body, including the lymph nodes and muscles of the extremities; thus, systemic lymphoma was considered. Finally, ultrasound-guided biopsy of different sites yielded the same histopathological findings: sarcoidosis. The sarcoidosis in this case is characterized by a large number of involved sites with a wide range, and a variety of imaging data were complete but failed to suggest a diagnosis. Finally, a clear histopathological result was obtained under the guidance of ultrasound. This article reviewed the relevant literature and concluded that ultrasound-guided puncture to obtain histopathological results is a simple and effective method for the diagnosis of sarcoidosis.

Recent research has demonstrated that additive manufacturing (AM) can be used to produce directionally sensitive high explosives (HEs), but detonation wave propagation in AM HEs with variable internal structure has not been studied. In this work, samples were printed using a 73 wt. % octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine-based HE ink. Flash x-ray radiography imaging was used to observe density changes in two imaging planes of each sample during detonation, and high-speed imaging was used to calculate the detonation velocity at the HE surface. The detonation front initially appears to fail in internal channel regions of the HE, but late reactions occurred in two samples, which increased the material bulk density by 2.8%, possibly due to shock convergence phenomena. The calculated detonation wave pressure similarly increased, but the accuracy of the results is uncertain because of the deviation of the low bulk density printed samples from the cast charge principal isentrope. Purpose: In order to better understand the imaging of severe trauma in sport, this study describes the imaging modalities utilized to image athletes who experienced severe traumatic injuries at the Beijing Winter Olympic Games 2022, the distribution of these modalities in relation to the sporting facilities, and the types of injuries imaged in each sport. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis with descriptive tables and figures, performed on a single population (athletes of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games 2022). Results: Of the 2871 athletes in the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, there were 40 athletes with severe injuries who underwent medical imaging. MRI was used more often than Radiography or CT. Athletes at venues without MRI on site had to be transferred to adjacent hospitals for care. Alpine and Freestyle skiing athletes experienced the majority of severe traumatic injuries at this Olympic Games, and the majority of injuries were to the lower limb. Conclusions: Access to medical imaging for severely injured athletes is a critical consideration in the organization of any sporting event. MRI in particular is highly utilized in this population. Summary: We developed a new tool to assess the severity of osteoporotic vertebral fracture using radiographs of the spine. Our technique can be used in patient care by helping to stratify patients with osteoporotic vertebral fractures into appropriate treatment pathways. It can also be used for research purposes. Purpose: The aim of our study was to propose a semi-quantitative (SQ) grading scheme for osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) on anteroposterior (AP) radiographs. Methods: On AP radiographs, the vertebrae are divided into right and left halves, which are graded (A) vertical rectangle, (B) square, (C) traverse rectangle, and (D) trapezoid; whole vertebrae are graded (E) transverse band or (F) bow-tie. Type A and B were compared with normal and Genant SQ grade 1 OVF, Type C and D with grade 2 OVF, and Type E and F with grade 3 OVF. Spine AP radiographs and lateral radiographs of 50 females were assessed by AP radiographs SQ grading. After training, an experienced board-certified radiologist and a radiology trainee assessed the 50 AP radiographs. Results: The height-to-width ratio of the half vertebrae varied 1.32–1.48. On lateral radiographs, 84 vertebrae of the 50 patients had OVFs (38 grade 1, 24 grade 2, and 22 grade 3). On AP radiographs, the radiologist correctly assigned 84.2%, 91.7%, and 77.2% and the trainee correctly assigned 68.4%, 79.2%, and 81.8% of grade 1, 2, and 3 OVFs, respectively. Compared with lateral radiographs, the radiologist had a weighted Kappa of 0.944 including normal vertebrae and 0.883 not including normal vertebrae, while the corresponding Kappa values for the trainee were 0.891 and 0.830, respectively. Biplane radiography has emerged as the gold standard for accurately measuring in vivo skeletal kinematics during physiological loading. The purpose of this scoping review was to map the extent, range, and nature of biplane radiography research on humans from 2004 through 2022. A literature search was performed using the terms biplane radiography, dual fluoroscopy, dynamic stereo X‐ray, and biplane videoradiography. All articles referenced in included publications were also assessed for inclusion. A secondary search was then performed using the names of the most frequently appearing principal investigators among included papers. A total of 379 manuscripts were identified and included. The first studies published in 2004 focused on the native knee, followed by studies of the ankle joint complex in 2006, the shoulder in 2007, and the spine in 2008. Nearly half (180, 47.5%) of all manuscripts investigated knee kinematics. The average number of publications increased from 21.6 per year from 2012 to 2017 to 34.6 per year from 2017 to 2022. The average number of participants per study was 16, with a range from 1 to 101. A total of 90.2% of studies featured cohorts of 30 or less. The most prolific research groups for each joint were: Mass General Hospital (lumbar spine and knee), Henry Ford Hospital (shoulder), the University of Utah (ankle and hip), The University of Pittsburgh (cervical spine), and Brown University (hand/wrist/elbow). Future advancements in biplane radiography research are dependent upon increased availability of these imaging systems, standardization of data collection protocols, and the development of automated approaches to expedite data processing. It is believed by many that reference data for age estimation purposes must be imaging-modality specific. A study from our department has however proven otherwise. We therefore found it interesting to investigate this further by looking at the level of agreement between different imaging modalities. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of agreement between the three radiological modalities, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and digital radiography (DR), in assessing the ossification of the epiphyses of the knee. A total of 34 deceased individuals of 10–25 years of age, brought in for a medicolegal autopsy at our department, were scanned by CT, MRI, and DR. The ossification stages of the three bones of the right knee, distal femoral, proximal tibial, and proximal fibular epiphysis were assessed using the established combined staging method by Schmeling et al. and Kellinghaus et al. Analysis of the results by Cohen's weighted kappa showed a good agreement between CT and DR (K = 0.61–0.70), and MRI and DR (K = 0.68–0.79) but only moderate agreement between CT and MRI (K = 0.55–0.57). This leads us to conclude that different radiological images cannot be used interchangeably for age estimation purposes, so reference material needs to be imaging-modality specific. Background: Measures of lumbar lordosis (LL) and elliptical modeling variables have been shown to discriminate between normal and chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients. Pelvic morphology influences an individual's sagittal lumbar alignment. Our purpose is to investigate the sensitivity and specificity of lumbar sagittal radiographic alignment and modeling variables to identify if these can discriminate between normal controls and CLBP patients. Methods: We conducted a computer analysis of digitized vertebral body corners on lateral lumbar radiographs of normal controls and CLBP patients. Fifty normal controls were attained from a required pre-employment physical examination (29 men; 21 women; mean age of 27.7 ± 8.5 years), with no history of low back pain, a normal spinal examination, no pathologies, anomalies, or instability. Additionally, 50 CLBP patients (29 men; 29.5 ± 8 years of age) were randomly chosen and matched to the characteristics of the controls. The inclusion criteria required no abnormalities on lumbar spine radiographs. The parameters included the following: ARA L1-L5 lordosis, ARA T12-S1 lordosis, Cobb T12-S1, b/a elliptical modelling ratio, sacral base angle (SBA), and S1 posterior tangent to vertical (PTS1). Two measures of pelvic morphology were determined for each person—the angle of pelvic incidence (API) and posterior tangent pelvic incidence angle (PTPIA)—and the relationships between API − ARA T12-S1, API − Cobb T12-S1, and API − ARA L1-5 was determined. Descriptive statistics and correlations among the primary variables were determined. The receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC curves) for primary variables were analyzed. Results: The mean values of LL were statistically different between the normal and CLBP groups (p < 0.001), indicating a hypo-lordotic lumbar spine for the CLBP group. The mean b/a ratio was lower in the chronic pain group (p = 0.0066). The pelvic morphology variables were similar between the groups (p > 0.05). API had a stronger correlation to the SBA and Cobb T12-S1 than PTPIA did, while PTPIA had a stronger correlation to the S1 tangent and ARA T12-S1 than API did. While CLBP patients had a stronger correlation of ARA T12-S1 and Cobb T12-S1 relative to the pelvic morphology, they also had a reduced correlation of ARA L1-L5 lordosis relative to their SBA and pelvic morphology measures. API − T12-S1, API − L1-L5, and API − Cobb T12-S1 were statistically different between the groups, p < 0.001. Using ROC curve analyses, it was identified that ARA L1-L5 lordosis of 36° and ARA T12-S1 of 68° have a good sensitivity and specificity to discriminate between normal and CLBP patients. ROC curve analyses identified that lordosis ARAT12-S1 < 68° (AUC = 0.83), lordosis ARAL1-L5 < 36° (AUC = 0.78), API − ARA T12-S1 < −18° (AUC = 0.75), API − ARAL1-L5 > 35° (AUC = 0.71), and API − Cobb T12-S1 < −5° (AUC = 0.69) had moderate to good discrimination between groups (AUC = 0.83, 0.78, 0.75, and 0.72). Conclusions: Pelvic morphology is similar between normal and CLBP patients. CLBP patients have an abnormal 'fit' of their API − ARAT12-S1 and L1-L5 lumbar lordosis relative to their pelvic morphology and sacral tilt shown as a hypolordosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The origin of the cosmic magnetic field remains an unsolved mystery, relying not only on specific dynamo processes but also on the seed field to be amplified. Recently, the diffuse radio emission and Faraday rotation observations reveal that there has been a microgauss-level magnetic field in intracluster medium in the early universe, which places strong constraints on the strength of the initial field and implies the underlying kinetic effects; the commonly believed Biermann battery can only provide extremely weak seed of 10-21 G. Here, we present evidence for the spontaneous Weibel-type magnetogenesis in laser-produced weakly collisional plasma with the three-dimensional synchronous proton radiography, where the distribution anisotropy directly arises from the temperature gradient, even without the commonly considered interpenetrating plasmas or shear flows. This field can achieve sufficient strength and is sensitive to Coulomb collision. Our results demonstrate the importance of kinetics in magnetogenesis in weakly collisional astrophysical scenarios. Alegoría de la construcción and Alegoría del trabajo were the first mural paintings commissioned to Saturnino Herrán (1887–1918), and they occupied a significant place in one of the most important schools in Mexico. The non-invasive methodology employed included different documentation phases and in situ multi-technique analyses. Hyperspectral imaging and digital radiography were used for a general characterization of the materials and were complemented with localized analyses by portable microscopy, and XRF and FORS spectroscopies. A complete identification of the original and the restoration palettes was achieved. In recent years, indirect digital radiography detectors have been actively studied to improve radiographic image performance with low radiation exposure. This study aimed to achieve low-dose radiation imaging with a thick scintillation detector while simultaneously obtaining the resolution of a thin scintillation detector. The proposed method was used to predict the optimal point spread function (PSF) between thin and thick scintillation detectors by considering image quality assessment (IQA). The process of identifying the optimal PSF was performed on each sub-band in the wavelet domain to improve restoration accuracy. In the experiments, the edge preservation index (EPI) values of the non-blind deblurred image with a blurring sigma of σ = 5.13 pixels and the image obtained with optimal parameters from the thick scintillator using the proposed method were approximately 0.62 and 0.76, respectively. The coefficient of variation (COV) values for the two images were approximately 1.02 and 0.63, respectively. Radiological image analysis using machine learning has been extensively applied to enhance biopsy diagnosis accuracy and assist radiologists with precise cures. With improvements in the medical industry and its technology, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been essential in detecting early cancer signs in patients that could not be observed physically, exclusive of introducing errors. CAD is a detection system that combines artificially intelligent techniques with image processing applications thru computer vision. Several manual procedures are reported in state of the art for cancer diagnosis. Still, they are costly, time-consuming and diagnose cancer in late stages such as CT scans, radiography, and MRI scan. In this research, numerous state-of-the-art approaches on multi-organs detection using clinical practices are evaluated, such as cancer, neurological, psychiatric, cardiovascular and abdominal imaging. Additionally, numerous sound approaches are clustered together and their results are assessed and compared on benchmark datasets. Standard metrics such as accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and false-positive rate are employed to check the validity of the current models reported in the literature. Introduction: Periapical lesions of teeth are typically evaluated using periapical X-rays (PA) or cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT); however, ultrasound imaging (US) can also be used to detect bone defects. A comparative analysis is necessary to establish the diagnostic accuracy of US for the detection of periapical lesions in comparison with PA and CBCT. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the measurement precision of US against PA and CBCT in detecting periapical lesions. Methods: This study included 43 maxillary and mandibular teeth with periapical lesions. All teeth were examined clinically, radiographically, and ultrasonographically. Observers evaluated and measured the periapical lesions on CBCT, PA, and US images. Results: The comparison of lesion size showed that it differs significantly between the different methods of examination. A statistically significant difference was found between CBCT and US (mean difference = 0.99 mm, 95% CI [0.43–1.55]), as well as between CBCT and PA (mean difference = 0.61 mm, 95% CI [0.17–1.05]). No difference was found between the US and PA methods (p = 0.193). Conclusion: US cannot replace PA radiography in detecting pathologies but it can accurately measure and characterize periapical lesions with minimal radiation exposure. Proton radiography is a promising development in proton therapy, and researchers are currently exploring optimal detector materials to construct proton radiography detector arrays. High-density glass scintillators may improve integrating-mode proton radiography detectors by increasing spatial resolution and decreasing detector thickness. We evaluated several new scintillators, activated with europium or terbium, with proton response measurements and Monte Carlo simulations, characterizing relative luminosity, ionization quenching, and proton radiograph spatial resolution. We applied a correction based on Birks's analytical model for ionization quenching. The data demonstrate increased relative luminosity with increased activation element concentration, and higher relative luminosity for samples activated with europium. An increased glass density enables more compact detector geometries and higher spatial resolution. These findings suggest that a tungsten and gadolinium oxide-based glass activated with 4% europium is an ideal scintillator for testing in a full-size proton radiography detector. Background: Forward head posture (FHP) and altered cervical lordotic curvatures are common spine displacements often associated with neck pain and disability. Two primary categories for determining FHP exist: radiographic and postural measurements. Methods: This study investigated the correlation between the craniovertebral angle (CVA), the radiographically measured C2–C7 sagittal vertical axis (SVA), and cervical lordosis (absolute rotation angle: ARA C2–C7) in a sample of participants with chronic myofascial pain (CMP). In 120 participants, we performed both a postural measurement of the CVA and a lateral cervical radiograph, where the C2–C7 SVA and ARA C2–C7 were measured. A linear-regression R2 value to assess the correlation between the CVA, C2–C7 SVA, and ARA C2–C7 was sought. Results: A statistically significant weak linear fit was identified (Spearman's r = 0.549; R2 = 0.30, p < 0.001) between the CVA and C2–C7 SVA, having considerable variation between the two measures. A statistically significant linear fit (very weak) was identified for the lordosis ARA C2–C7 and the CVA: Spearman's r = 0.524; R2 = 0.275; p < 0.001. A value of 50° for the CVA corresponded to a value of 20 mm for the C2–C7 SVA on an X-ray. Conclusion: While the CVA and radiographic C2–C7 SVA are weakly correlated in an individual, they seem to represent different aspects of sagittal cervical balance. The CVA cannot replace radiographically measured cervical lordosis. We recommend that more emphasis be given to radiographic measures of sagittal cervical alignment than the CVA when considering patient interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Ocular foreign bodies (OFBs) are a relatively common occurrence in ocular injuries, and a severe risk factor for vision disorders. They are notoriously challenging to identify and localize precisely to allow surgical removal, even with the most recent technological advancements. Purpose: To compare the efficiency of different imaging methods in detecting and localizing OFBs. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients with OFBs, detected by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and confirmed during surgery. Patients who presented to our medical center between January 2016 and January 2022 and also underwent computed tomography (CT), X ray, and/or ocular B‐scan ultrasonography (B‐scans) were selected. Results: This study included 134 patients with a history of ocular trauma and OFBs (mean age: 47.25 years, range: 8–78). The mean time interval from injury to UBM examination was 36.31 months (range: 0.2–120 months). Most OFBs were metallic (51.82%) or plant‐based (25.37%); 22.39% of them were located in the sclera, 26.87% in the anterior chamber, and 23.88% in the ciliary body and iris. OFBs ranged in size from 0.10 to 6.67 mm (mean: 1.15 ± 1.10 mm). B‐scans identified OFBs in 37 of the 119 patients examined (31.09%); CT in 52 of 84 patients (61.90%); and radiography in 29 of 50 patients (58.00%). Univariate and multivariate analyses determined that both CT and radiography showed low detection rates for plant‐based versus non‐plant‐based OFBs (CT: p < 0.001; radiography: p = 0.007), small particles (<1.00 mm vs. >1.00 mm; CT: p = 0.001, radiography: p = 0.024), and with eyeball wall locations (vs. intraocular; CT: p < 0.001, radiography: p = 0.021). Similarly, B‐scans were less efficient for plant‐based and eyeball wall‐located OFBs (both p = 0.001), whereas the difference based on dimensions was not significant (p = 0.118). Conclusions: CT, radiography, and B‐scans showed lower detection rates for plant‐based, small, and eyeball wall‐located OFBs. Background: Ideally, suspected airway compression in symptomatic children with lymphobronchial tuberculosis (TB) would be diagnosed using modern computed tomography (CT) assisted by coronal minimum intensity projection (MinIP) reconstructions. However, in TB-endemic regions with limited resources, practitioners rely on conventional radiography for diagnosing TB and its complications. Furthermore, airway compression detected on conventional radiographs would upgrade a patient into the severe category according to the new World Health Organization guidelines, precluding the patient from shorter treatment protocols. The accuracy of conventional radiographs in the context of detecting airway compression in children with TB has not been specifically evaluated against an imaging gold standard. Objective: We aimed to compare frontal chest radiographs against thick-slab angled coronal CT MinIP in identifying airway stenosis at ten specific sites and to determine observer agreement between the modalities regarding the degree of stenosis. Materials and methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study compared chest radiographs with standardized angled coronal CT MinIP in children with symptomatic lymphobronchial TB at ten predetermined airway locations. Chest radiographs were evaluated by one pediatric radiologist and CT MinIP reconstructions were independently interpreted by three readers. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated using CT MinIP as the gold standard. Stenosis was graded as 1 for mild (1–50%), 2 for moderate (51–75%), 3a for severe (76–99%), and 3b for total occlusion (100%). Agreement between the two modalities regarding severity of stenosis was calculated using the kappa coefficient for each affected site. Results: A total of 37 patients were included in the study. The median age of patients was 14.3 months (interquartile range 8.0–23.2). Three hundred and seventy individual bronchi (10 from each of the 37 patients) were evaluated for stenosis. Chest radiographs showed that 31 out of 37 (84%) patients had stenosis in at least one of ten evaluated sites, most commonly the left main bronchus and bronchus intermedius, and this was confirmed via CT MinIP. The gold standard (CT MinIP) demonstrated stenosis in at least one of ten sites in all 37 patients (100%). Left main bronchus stenosis was detected by chest radiography with a 92.9% sensitivity and 100% specificity. Sensitivity and specificity for bronchus intermedius stenosis were 80% and 75%, respectively. There was substantial agreement for grade of stenosis between chest radiographs and CT (kappa=0.67) for the left main bronchus and moderate agreement (kappa=0.58) for the bronchus intermedius. Severe stenosis was found in 78 bronchi on CT compared to 32 bronchi (Grade 3a: 9, Grade 3b: 23) on chest radiographs. Conclusion: The diagnosis of pulmonary TB in children continues to rely heavily on imaging, and we have shown that in young children, chest radiographs had a high sensitivity and specificity for detecting airway stenosis at certain anatomical sites, when adequately visualized, resulting from tuberculous lymph node compression at left main bronchus and bronchus intermedius. For most sites, the interobserver agreement was poor. Stenosis of the left main bronchus and bronchus intermedius should be the focus of chest radiograph interpretation and can assist both diagnosis and classification of patients for treatment. In recent years, imaging has become increasingly important to confirm diagnosis, monitor disease activity, and predict disease course and outcome in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Over the past few decades, great efforts have been made to improve the quality of diagnostic imaging and to reach a consensus on which methods and scoring systems to use. However, there are still some critical issues, and the diagnosis, course, and management of JIA are closely related to clinical assessment. This review discusses the main indications for conventional radiography (XR), musculoskeletal ultrasound (US), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), while trying to maintain a clinical perspective. The diagnostic-therapeutic timing at which one or the other method should be used, depending on the disease/patient phenotype, will be assessed, considering the main advantages and disadvantages of each imaging modality according to the currently available literature. Pediatric lung infections continue to be a leading cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality. Although both pediatric and general radiologists are familiar with typical lung infections and their imaging findings in children, relatively rare lung infections continue to present a diagnostic challenge. In addition, the advances in radiological imaging and emergence of several new lung infections in recent years facilitated the need for up-to-date knowledge on this topic. In this review article, we discuss the imaging findings of pediatric lung infections caused by unusual/uncommon and new pathogens. We review the epidemiological, clinical, and radiological imaging findings of viral (coronavirus disease 2019, Middle East respiratory syndrome, bird flu), bacterial (Streptococcus anginosus, Francisella tularensis, Chlamydia psittaci), and parasitic lung infections (echinococcosis, paragonimiasis, amoebiasis). Additional disorders whose clinical course and imaging findings may mimic lung infections in children (hypersensitivity pneumonitis, pulmonary hemorrhage, eosinophilic pneumonia) are also presented, to aid in differential diagnosis. As the clinical presentation of children with new and unusual lung infections is often non-specific, imaging evaluation plays an important role in initial detection, follow-up for disease progression, and assessment of potential complications. The current role of conventional radiography in the diagnosis, monitoring and prognosis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is reviewed, as its role has changed with the increasing use of ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, as well as with the introduction of biological drugs. Conventional radiography does not play an important role in the diagnosis of JIA, as this is based on history, clinical examination and laboratory findings. The main role of conventional radiography is in the detection and monitoring of growth disorders and chronic structural and morphological changes of the affected joints and bones, in addition to helping with the differential diagnosis of conditions that mimic JIA. Radiographic changes of the joints depend on the age of the child, the type and duration of arthritis and the specific joints affected. There are no standard protocols for arthritis monitoring and most indications for imaging are based on individual case-by-case decisions. The development of degenerative joint changes is considered a poor predictive factor, but there are no clear studies that more precisely define the predictive value of radiographic changes. Conventional radiography remains an important imaging modality in narrowing the differential diagnosis and in evaluating growth disorders and the developing destructive joint changes. Purpose: We present the functional and clinical results of a combined surgical technique that functionally restores chronic Acromioclavicular Joint Instability (AJI). The method combines a double-looped suture fixation augmented with a semitendinosus autograft. Methods: Between 2017 and 2021, 15 patients were treated using the surgical technique. All patients suffered an Acromioclavicular Joint Separation that remained untreated for at least 6 (6–16) weeks after the initial injury. Four Ethibond sutures were passed below the coracoid process and through a 4.5 drill hole in the clavicle. The sutures provided adequate horizontal and vertical reduction and stabilization of the clavicle. A semitendinosus autograft was passed below the coracoid process and looped around the clavicle. The remaining graft limbs were used to reconstruct the acromioclavicular capsule. Patients were radiologically evaluated with bilateral anteroposterior (AP), Zanca, and Alexander views. The clinical evaluation was based on the Acromioclavicular Joint Instability Score and the Constant-Murley Score. Results: The mean follow-up period was 31.2 months (17–61). The mean last ACJIS and CMS scores were 96 (90–100) and 97.67 (87–100), respectively. Reduction of the clavicle was radiologically confirmed in all cases throughout the follow-up period. AC arthritis was reported in 1 case without associated clinical symptoms. No significant complications were reported, and all patients returned to the pre-injury activity level. Conclusion: The presented functional reconstruction of the AC joint disruption in chronic cases is an effective and secure method with low complication rates and good clinical results. Purpose: The management of depressed skull fractures in infants can be either conservative or surgical. This study aimed to examine the outcomes of management with a negative-pressure vacuum device on depressed skull fractures in newborns. Methods: Twenty-eight patients (aged 1–6 days) with simple depressed skull fractures underwent skull elevation using negative-pressure vacuum devices. A protocol for nonsurgical management was adopted for infants with such fractures between 2010 and 2023. All patients were initially evaluated with neurological examination and complementary assessments—hematological and coagulation studies, transfontanel transcranial ultrasound, skull radiography, and computed tomography scanning with three-dimensional reconstruction—according to availability and clinical needs. Gentle (negative) extraction pressure was applied with one of several devices (according to institutional availability) for a maximum duration of 60 s; this was performed as soon as possible after diagnosis, preferably within 72 h. Follow-up data, available in the clinical records, were reported. Results: All patients exhibited satisfactory elevation of the depressed bone without associated injuries, except one patient who presented with an associated cephalohematoma which prevented optimal device coupling to generate sufficient vacuum pressure for correction. Neither neurological deficits nor development of epilepsy was noted; normal neurological assessment and oral alimentation tolerance were confirmed within 24 h post procedure. Conclusions: According to our data, ping-pong skull fracture elevation using the vacuum method is a safe and satisfactory treatment in the neonatal period. Background Many different risk stratification systems have been formulated for thyroid nodules, differing in their fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) indication, suggesting a lack of consensus around the world. Purpose This prospective study was conducted to find the best guideline for risk stratification, for a better malignancy yield, and with reduced rates of negative FNACs among three Thyroid Imaging, Reporting, and Data System (TIRADS) guidelines. Materials and Methods A total of 625 thyroid nodules with conclusive FNAC or histopathological diagnosis were included in the study. Various sonographic parameters were recorded. They were classified into categories as per the three guidelines and compared with FNAC diagnosis. The guidelines were evaluated in terms of sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and diagnostic accuracy. Sensitivity and specificity were compared by McNemar's test. Results American College of Radiology (ACR) TIRADS had the highest diagnostic accuracy (56.8%), specificity (50.75%), positive predictive value (23.92%), lowest rates of negative FNACs (76.08%), and high negative predictive value (97.84 %). Korean (K) TIRADS had the maximum sensitivity (97.75%), highest negative predictive value (98.44%), and gross malignancy yield. European TIRADS was between the two other guidelines in most parameters with specificity like K TIRADS. Conclusion All the three guidelines are very good screening tools, with comparable high sensitivity. ACR TIRADS is better in terms of specificity and reduced rates of negative FNACs. The categorization of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) into radiographic (r-axSpA) and non-radiographic (nr-axSpA) subtypes is important in clinical trials but may be of less value in clinical practice. This exploratory cross-sectional, multi-center study evaluated patients with axSpA under routine care at German clinical rheumatology sites (RHADAR real-world database), with a focus on imaging data used for diagnostic classifications. Our analyses included 371 patients with axSpA. The mean (standard deviation [SD]) age was 50.9 (14.0) years, disease duration was 16.4 (13.5) years, and 39.6% were female. Based on the rheumatologist's final assessment, almost half of patients had definite r-axSpA (n = 179; 48.2%), 53 (14.3%) had suspected r-axSpA, 112 (30.2%) had non-radiographic-axSpA (nr-axSpA), and 27 (7.3%) had undefined axSpA. Patients assessed with definite or suspected r-axSpA were more likely to be treated with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) (62.0% and 64.2%, respectively) compared with nr-axSpA or undefined axSpA patients (37.5% and 48.1%, respectively). Almost all patients (348/371; 93.8%) had sacroiliac joint imaging data (radiographs or magnetic resonance imaging) documented in their charts, but only 216 (58.2%) had conventional radiographs required for formal diagnosis of r-axSpA by modified New York criteria. Follow-up radiographic imaging in nr-axSpA patients was uncommon (23/216 [25.0%]) but confirmed r-axSpA in 9/23 patients (39.1%). In conclusion, radiographs were available for slightly more than half of axSpA patients. Follow-up imaging was infrequent during rheumatology care in Germany but confirmed r-axSpA in ~ 40% of patients originally considered to have nr-axSpA. This study aimed to conduct a cross-sectional data analysis of the alveolar bone mineral density (al-BMD) in 225 patients of various ages and different sexes. The al-BMD value in the mandibular incisor region was calculated using a computer-aided measurement system (DentalSCOPE) for intraoral radiography. All participants with intact teeth (101 males and 124 females; age range, 25–89 years) were divided into three age-segregated groups (25–49, 50–74, and > 75 years). Statistical differences were evaluated using the Mann–Whitney U or Kruskal–Wallis test. Males exhibited significantly greater al-BMD than females (p < 0.001). The highest means were observed in the 25–49 age group, regardless of sex (1007.90 mg/cm2 in males, 910.90 mg/cm2 in females). A 9.8% decrease in al-BMD was observed with the increase in age in males (25–49 to 50–74 years; p = 0.004); however, no further changes were seen thereafter. In females, a decreasing trend was seen throughout the lifespan, with values reaching up to 76.0% of the initial peak value (p < 0.001). Similar to other skeletal sites, the alveolar bone exhibits sex differences and undergoes a reduction in BMD via the normal aging process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multilayer printed circuit boards (PCBs) can be produced not only in the traditional way but also additively. Both traditional and additive manufacturing can lead to invisible defects in the internal structure of the electronic component, eventually leading to the spontaneous failure of the device. No matter what kind of technology is used for the production of PCBs, when they are used in important structures, quality control is important to ensure the reliability of the component. The nondestructive testing (NDT) of the structure of manufactured electronic components can help ensure the quality of devices. Investigations of possible changes in the structure of the product can help identify the causes of defects. Different types of manufacturing technologies can lead to diverse types of possible defects. Therefore, employing several nondestructive inspection techniques could be preferable for the inspection of electronic components. In this article, we present a comparison of various NDT techniques for the evaluation of the quality of PCBs produced using traditional and additive manufacturing technologies. The methodology for investigating the internal structure of PCBs is based on several of the most reliable and widely used technologies, namely, acoustic microscopy, active thermography, and radiography. All of the technologies investigated have their advantages and disadvantages, so if high-reliability products are to be produced, it would be advantageous to carry out tests using multiple technologies in order to detect the various types of defects and determine their parameters. Introduction Methods Results Conclusions There is variability in clinical practice regarding the number of radiographic views required to accurately determine umbilical venous catheter (UVC) tip position. Some units prefer performing a single anteroposterior (AP) view and others do both AP and lateral views. The aim of this study was to compare the need for one versus two radiographical views to accurately determine UVC tip position.Radiographs of 382 infants (all gestations) from two level six neonatal units were included in the study. Patients with congenital anomalies and those who had adjustment of UVC position between AP and lateral films being performed were excluded. Six clinicians reviewed anonymized AP only images and documented UVC tip position. Subsequently, they reviewed both AP and lateral views and again documented the UVC tip position. Results were compared to the expert consensus which was taken from the consensus of two paediatric radiologists.The study population had a mean gestational age of 32.8 weeks and birth weight of 2190 g, with 58% males. The UVC tip positions were accurately determined 76% times by the AP view alone and 82% times by using both the AP and lateral views (P < 0.001). The low placed UVC tip position which is the most inappropriate for use was more accurately determined by two images (78% times) rather than single image (70% times) (P < 0.001).Utilising both AP and lateral views was superior in accurately determining UVC tip position to AP view alone. Objective. Compact ion imaging systems based on thin detectors are a promising prospect for the clinical environment since they are easily integrated into the clinical workflow. Their measurement principle is based on energy deposition instead of the conventionally measured residual energy or range. Therefore, thin detectors are limited in the water-equivalent thickness range they can image with high precision. This article presents our energy painting method, which has been developed to render high precision imaging with thin detectors feasible even for objects with larger, clinically relevant water-equivalent thickness (WET) ranges. Approach. A detection system exclusively based on pixelated silicon Timepix detectors was used at the Heidelberg ion-beam therapy center to track single helium ions and measure their energy deposition behind the imaged object. Calibration curves were established for five initial beam energies to relate the measured energy deposition to WET. They were evaluated regarding their accuracy, precision and temporal stability. Furthermore, a 60 mm × 12 mm region of a wedge phantom was imaged quantitatively exploiting the calibrated energies and five different mono-energetic images. These mono-energetic images were combined in a pixel-by-pixel manner by averaging the WET-data weighted according to their single-ion WET precision (SIWP) and the number of contributing ions. Main result. A quantitative helium-beam radiograph of the wedge phantom with an average SIWP of 1.82(5) % over the entire WET interval from 150 mm to 220 mm was obtained. Compared to the previously used methodology, the SIWP improved by a factor of 2.49 ± 0.16. The relative stopping power value of the wedge derived from the energy-painted image matches the result from range pullback measurements with a relative deviation of only 0.4 %. Significance. The proposed method overcomes the insufficient precision for wide WET ranges when employing detection systems with thin detectors. Subgaleal hematomas are accumulation of blood between periosteum and galea aponeurosis. A 2-year-old male Chihuahua was presented with a severe head swelling after trauma. Radiography and computed tomography (CT) showed a massive swelling encircling the entire calvarial vault, extending toward the cervical neck and crossing the suture line. It was heterogeneously, mild hyperdense fluid to soft tissue attenuating with contrast enhancement on CT images. On day 4, physical and imaging examination showed resolution of the calvarial swelling. The use of midfoot wedges for the correction of flatfeet disorders, such as progressive collapsing foot disorder, has increased greatly in recent years. However, the wedge material/composition has yet to be standardized. Metallic wedges offer advantages such as comparable elasticity to bone, reduced infection risk, and minimized osseous resorption, but a comprehensive review is lacking in the literature. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review was to organize all studies pertaining to the use of metallic wedges for flatfoot correction to better understand their efficacy and safety. This systematic review adhered to PRISMA guidelines, and articles were searched in multiple databases (PubMED, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and Web of Science) until August 2023 using a defined algorithm. Inclusion criteria encompassed midfoot surgeries using metallic wedges, observational studies, and English-language full-text articles. Data extraction, article quality assessment, and statistical analyses were performed. Among 11 included articles, a total of 444 patients were assessed. The average follow-up duration was 18 months. Radiographic outcomes demonstrated that patients who received metallic wedges experienced improvements in lateral calcaneal pitch angle and Meary's angle, with an enhancement of up to 15.9 degrees reported in the latter. Success rates indicated superior outcomes for metallic wedges (99.3%) compared to bone allograft wedges (89.9%), while complications were generally minor, including hardware pain and misplacement. Notably, there were no infection complications due to the inert nature of the metallic elements. This review summarizes the effectiveness, success rates, and safety of metallic wedges for flatfoot correction. Radiographic improvements and high success rates highlight their efficacy. Minor complications, including pain and mispositioning, were reported, but the infection risk remained low. Our results demonstrate that metallic midfoot wedges may be a viable option over allograft wedges with proper planning. Future research should prioritize long-term studies and standardized measures.
